Announcements 2nd Annual Library Poster Contest Winner AnnouncedCongratulations to all 53 students that entered the library poster contest. This year's theme was "Fall for Books!". There were many, many excellent and creative entries! Congratulations to Josie A. for her winning idea. Her sketch was made into a poster that is now hanging into the hallway outside the library door. Thank you to ALL of our great artists and participants!
Water bottles and books don't go well together! In the first two months of our check-out year, we've already had four books returned with pages soggy enough to need replacement of the entire book. Sometimes just a little wet spot will dry fine, but the books that really get a soaking will mold after they finally dry out and are placed back onto the tightly packed shelves. These books must be discarded, and a replacement book fine notice is sent home with the student. Students may not check out until the fine is paid. Although we did talk about the dangers of water damage to books at our library orientation, it would be wonderful if parents could remind students to take their water bottles to school EMPTY. There are plenty of drinking fountains available at school to fill the bottles and keep students well hydrated without the danger of a spill that will result in a large replacement fine. Thank you for understanding.
MICHIGAN READS! One Book, One State! For the 5th year in a row, we are pleased to announce that Indian Hill Elementary is participating in the statewide reading program titled MICHIGAN READS! The goal of this awesome program is to encourage as many students as possible to read the same book throughout the State. This year's book is Memoirs of a Goldfish by Devin Scillian. This book was published by Sleeping Bear Press in Ann Arbor, MI in 2010. This is an adorable tale of a goldfish and his day-to-day adventures as his little fish bowl becomes overcrowded with all the trappings of a much bigger fish tank. Everyone will enjoy the ending too. Teachers will check out the book to read together as a class, and students will add their names to a Michigan Reads! poster that will hang in the hallway outside the library door. If you would like to check out the book yourself, the Genesee District Library does have copies available, and if you would like to learn more about Michigan's wonderful reading program, please visit www.michigan.gov/michiganreads. Previous Michigan Reads! titles available at Indian hill library include: The Runaway Garden by Jeffery L. Schatzer (2010), The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen (2009), Raccoon Tune by Nancy Shaw (2008), and Big Chickens by Leslie Helakoski (2007). Ask your child if they remember any of them from years past. They may just want to share them with you! Happy Reading!
Water Bottles and Damaged BooksPlease be aware that our Indian Hill Library is losing more and more books due to leaking or spilled water bottles in student backpacks. Books rarely dry out so that they may be placed back on the shelves for student check-out, and tight budgets mean choosing between new titles in the library or book replacements. Please consider sending water bottles to school empty and filling them at the drinking fountains to prevent this unfortunate situation. Thank you!
"Indian Hill READS for LIFE!"If you have a chance to stop by the library, you will see posters on the window wall between the library and the computer lab. These posters, of Indian Hill Staff, alumni, and future Jaguars show students that reading is important throughout their lives. Sometimes, students believe they only need to read for school. They don't realize that a love a reading is, not only a treasure, but that it's a necessity in day-to-day living. We, as a staff, would like to model good reading habits, and the posters show teachers and support staff reading in a variety of places. So...stop by if you have a chance...and please remember to model good reading for your children. If YOU love to read...THEY will love to read as well. Mrs. Baughan is looking for students to recommend books! Mrs. Baughan would like to kick off "BEST BOOKS"Indian Hill Kids Recommend....
Students may voluntarily meet with Mrs. Baughan to tell her about a book that they think is worth recommending to other students. Mrs. Baughan will ask a few questions, take a photo, and complete a page that will be displayed on the library tables. You may be in ANY grade to participate. The only requirement is that you READ! Why is Mrs. Baughan starting this program? Well...wouldn't it be wonderful if EVERYONE loved to read? If students find just the right book, maybe everyone WILL love to read! So...don't be shy. Recommend a book to Mrs. Baughan for "BEST BOOKS" today! Discussion Topics Files
